Veterans Day is this week, and in honor of the day we thought it would be worthwhile to share some of the history and the significance of this annual federal holiday that is observed in the United States. Veterans Day honors the men and women who have either served or are currently serving in the U.S. armed forces, and is a special occasion to recognize their contributions to our country’s safety and security.

Originally known as Armistice Day, November 11th marks the date in 1919 that the armistice with Germany went into effect, formally bringing an end to World War I. It was welcomed with large parades and community celebrations as everyone, elated to see an end to the conflict, turned out to share their joy with others. Later, unknown soldiers were also honored alongside World War I veterans on this day.

In 1954, Congress changed the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day so that all veterans, not just those who served in the Great War, could be saluted as part of the holiday. Veterans Day is sometimes confused with Memorial Day, which falls on the last Monday of May each year. Unlike Veterans Day, Memorial Day specifically honors those who have given their lives.

If you yourself are a veteran, thank you for your service! If you’re not a veteran, you likely know one or have a family member who has served. According to this video about Veterans Day from The History Channel, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that there are currently 21 million veterans living in the U.S. today. If you haven’t already, take a moment to thank them for their service to our country.
